Tips For Communicating With Your Spouse

It does not matter how long you and your spouse have been together or how close you are to each other - every relationship suffers from communication issues at some point in time. Here are a few tips to help you communicate better with your spouse.

All of us face a range of emotions on an everyday basis. In addition, we need to face a host of issues which weigh on our minds. To ease this burden we need to give vent to our emotions. Once you recognize this need, you will find the secret to learning how to listen effectively to your spouse. In order to listen effectively you need to be completely non-judgmental. Keep in mind that your spouse will not be encouraged to share their feelings if they feel rebuffed. Once in a while, your souse may want you to listen without actually expecting you to come up with a solution. If you are listening effectively you will be able to make out whether your spouse just wants you to listen patiently or whether they are expecting you to come up with a solution. While listening to your spouse show that you are interested in what they are saying.

The second issue that most people complain about is that their spouses just refuse to listen to what they have to say. To make your spouse listen to what you are saying, try and be aware of your tone and manner of speaking. Avoid nagging or being overly dramatic. Your spouse will get put off by these mannerisms and they will most likely switch off. If you feel unheard, let your spouse know. Often you will realize that your spouse has been busy with their day to day issues and has not been aware that they have not been listening to you. If necessary, schedule a time of the day when your spouse can listen to you with full attention.

Learn to express your feelings in a way that you do not hurt or offend your spouse. Do not say something that you will later regret saying. Try and mentally plan out what you are going to say, in advance. Stick to the plan and avoid blaming your spouse and calling them names. This will ensure your spouse does not get defensive and is more open to what you are saying. Most importantly, be honest about your action and intentions.
